We explain how to transfer texts and iMessages from one iPhone to another, or back them up to a Mac or Windows PC. Plus we explain how to use Messages in iCloud to keep all your Messages in sync, backed up, and save space on your iPhone

By Lucy Hattersley | 20 Jun 18

It's useful to know how to back up text messages, and transfer them from one iPhone to another, or to a Mac or PC. The obvious application is when setting up a new iPhone : when you open Messages for the first time it may be empty, and your old conversations can be important for work or hold sentimental value.

This article looks at the best ways to transfer SMS and iMessage texts from one iPhone to another.

Since Apple updated iOS and MacOS at the end of May 2018 it has been possible to store all your messages in iCloud, so that you can access every message you have ever recevied on all your devices (including your Mac) - and, crucially, gain easy access to all your messages on a new iPhone or iPad.

With this new feature - known as Messages in iCloud - turned on you will be able to keep all your Messages in sync across all your devices, back up the photos and attachments that are sent to you via iMessage, plus save space on your iPhone, iPad and Mac, and access your entire message history on any device anywhere.

Find an iPhone which is off or offline

If you hadn't noticed that your phone was missing and you suspect that the battery has now died or someone may have turned your iPhone off, there may still be a way to find it thanks to the Send Last Location feature mentioned above.

There is an option to turn on Send Last Location in Find My iPhone. With this turned the last known location of your iPhone will be stored for 24 hours after the battery runs out. This isn't on by default but when you open Find My iPhone on your iPhone you will see an alert asking you to enable it.

If you have Send Last Location enabled you will be able to see where your iPhone was when it ran out of battery or was turned off. Which will at least indicate if it was in your office, in the pub you went to after work, or somewhere else entirely (which may indicate it was stolen, or that you left it in the back of a cab/on the train).

Here's how to turn on Send Last Location:

  1. Tap Settings > [Your name]
  2. Tap Find My iPhone.
  3. Ensure Find My iPhone is set to On.
  4. Set Send Last Location to On.

Right now it isn't possible to locate an iPhone or iPad that is turned off, however, according to a report by CNBC in November 2016, Apple has patented technology that would allow a stolen or lost iPhone to be switched on remotely and transmit location information to its owner through the Find My iPhone feature.

We're not sure when or if this feature will be employed by Apple in their current or next generation iPhones, but we will be sure to update this article if we learn more.

Researchers have confirmed that the exploit works on versions of the Samsung Galaxy S6, the S6 Edge and Galaxy S4 Mini. But it may also be active on other Samsung Galaxy phones, since the keyboard software is installed on more devices.

Samsung is reported to have provided a patch to mobile network operators, who must push Android updates out themselves. But it’s unclear whether any networks have done so yet, and they are often slow to push out both incremental Android updates as well as security fixes.

SwiftKey has confirmed that the problem doesn’t affect the version of SwiftKey that’s available to download for any Android or iOS device from their app stores.

"We supply Samsung with the core technology that powers the word predictions in their keyboard," a SwiftKey statement said. "It appears that the way this technology was integrated on Samsung devices introduced the security vulnerability. We are doing everything we can to support our long-time partner Samsung in their efforts to resolve this obscure but important security issue."
